How the Society Works
We're a monthly book club for science fiction, fantasy, and the wonderfully weird—without the homework.
What is the Bermuda Triangle Society?
We're a monthly, theme-based book club for readers who love speculative fiction—science fiction, fantasy, mystery with weird elements, and everything in between.
Instead of everyone reading the same book, we pick a theme each month (like "Lost at Sea" or "AI & Androids"), and members read any book that fits. Then we gather to share what we discovered.
The result? A curated set of recommendations from people who actually read the books, tailored to our group's tastes—plus a welcoming space for anyone who just wants to listen and learn what to read next.
The Theme Format
Our approach is a bit different than standard book clubs.
- 1 No assigned reading. Pick any book (or audiobook!) that fits the theme. Read what excites you.
- 2 No homework pressure. Didn't finish? No problem. Come to listen. Come for the vibes. Come for the snacks.
- 3 Discovery-focused. You'll leave with a list of books recommended by real readers—not algorithms.
- 4 Democratic themes. Anyone can submit theme ideas, and we vote together on what's next.
What Happens at a Meeting?
Meetings run about an hour and follow a relaxed structure:
- Quick hellos & reading mood check — We go around and share what kind of reading mood we've been in lately.
- Lightning pitches — If you read something for the theme, give a 2-3 minute pitch: What's it about? Did it work for you? Who would you recommend it to? (Spoiler-light, please!)
- Theme discussion — Any topics related to the theme, or honorable mentions of theme appropriate books that caught your eye while exploring options.
- Onto the next — Last minute theme nominations and then we vote on next month's theme from the pool of submitted ideas.
- Build the starter list — Together, we brainstorm books that fit the new theme. These get posted on the website so everyone has a head start.
That's it. Low pressure, no need to get deep and philisophical.
Example Themes
Themes can be broad or specific, serious or silly. Here are some we've done or have in the pool:
Shipwrecks, ocean mysteries, underwater worlds
Wardrobes, rabbit holes, mysterious doorways
Synthetic minds, robot uprisings, digital souls
Groundhog Day energy, reset stories
Bonds formed under pressure, chosen families
Spells backfiring, magical chaos
Who Can Join?
Everyone! You don't need to be a hardcore sci-fi reader or a fantasy expert. If you're curious about speculative stories, you're welcome here.
We especially love:
- Readers who've "always meant to try more sci-fi/fantasy"
- Audiobook enthusiasts (they totally count!)
- People who just want recommendations without commitment
- Anyone who enjoys friendly book chat
